Labrador Puppy Feeding Program – The Right Way To Feed Your Labrador Retriever Puppy
Having a feeding program for your Labrador puppy is one of the most important factors in his early education. First of all, this gives his stomach enough time to process the food and use it to feed the body and second, it helps a lot with housebreaking the pup. As I said before, at early ages, dogs don’t have much control over their body, but by following a strict feeding program you will be able to control the time when he has to go out.
So here’s the schedule:
- Feed him three times a day, with snacks in between
- A full meal consists of two cups of Wellness dog food or their equivalent in meat, vegetables and cereals
- Snacks can consist of Dentastix or whatever you casually feed him throughout the day
- Snacks should not exceed the equivalent of one full meal.
The times are for you to decide, but you should basically feed him once in the morning, once at lunch and once at dinner. Also remember to take him out for a walk every time after he eats and has water. Reward him for doing his business outside.
It takes roughly 3-4 hours for the dog to digest the food, so take that into consideration when creating a schedule. Write those times on a sticky note and stick them some place where you can easily stumble upon them. If you stick to this program, his internal system will get used to it and he will always have to go out at predictable times. So if you were to house train the puppy, you would take him out at least 6 times a day for 5-10 minutes each time; one time immediately after every meal and another time 3 hours later. This tells us that you should feed him his last meal at least 3 hours after you go to bed. This will decrease the chances of him having to go during the night.
If your dog is overweight, cut the meals to a half until his body starts to come back to normal and take longer walks so that he gets to move around more. If he is underweight, he also needs the exercise for him to develop correctly, but you will also need to add an extra cup of food to every meal until his body adjusts and his ribs stop showing.
I hope this helps you a lot in your life as a Labrador puppy owner. If you have any questions or any other things to add, leave a comment here and I will get back to you.
