How to take advantage of your Labrador’s Training – In A Good Way

Labradors are very popular, not only as pets but also as great show dogs; for its large built, powerful body, and pleasing demeanor. They are usually perceived as very friendly dogs, and rightfully so. Most owners are very proud of their Labrador’s training. Labs can be taught plenty of tricks and are remarkably adept at learning them. The pinnacle showcase of a Labrador’s training though is in dog shows where the owner can display the beauty and obedience of his pet. There is no proof greater than the statistics within the American Kennel Club that shows how popular Labradors are. In the year 2002 alone, over 1.5 million labs were registered.

The American Kennel Club indicates that show quality lab should be around 2ft in height and around 33kg for males, and just below 2ft in height and 28kg for females. It should have a short and dense coat, and could come in black, yellow, or chocolate. The body should be strong and muscular with a broad head and a pronounced brow. Its ears should also hang close to the head. The muzzle should be of medium length with strong and powerful jaws.

To fully display a Labrador’s training, shows organize obedience trials where the dog and the owner perform several tricks. If you wish to join dog shows, the following must be included in your Labrador’s training:

·    Walk in a particular manner with your dog at your heel
·    Make your dog turn left or right upon command
·    Walk your dog at varied pace in any given order: halt, slow, normal, fast
·    Your Labrador’s training should involve sitting whenever you stop
·    Walking in figure eights around two people eight feet apart
·    You also need to show how your dog obeys the commands : sit, stand, down
·    Asking your dog to jump while he is approaching you
·    He would also have to come to heel then sit whenever he approaches you

Some of these tricks have to be done with and without a leash.

Dog shows are not only events to show off your Labrador’s training and your skill as a trainer. These events also serve as a platform where dog breeders can find the dogs with the best abilities and temperaments to breed. Show dogs with a proven pure lineage are not required to be neutered for the very purpose of breeding them with other show quality dogs to produce high quality offspring.
