Choose your pet’s name wisely
In the past , we used to name our dogs based on their physical or personality trait, like when the dog has a distinct spot, we tend to call them Spot, or Couch Potato for a lazy dog. However, today we consider dogs as real family members, so the latest trend is to give our pets human names. Some people call their pets after their favorite actors or actresses and others after their favorite cartoon characters, like Snoopy for dogs.
Ideally , names should only be given to pets that are very young and haven`t been called something else before. Changing a pets name can prove to be a difficult task to digest for the pet and even for yourself. You should always try to keep the same name for pets that have been adopted before.
How do you choose a name for your young pet then? Here is a guideline to help you make this process easy for you, and most importantly your pet:
First of all, dogs usually respond better to one or two syllable names, so pick a name your dog can easily recognize.
Secondly, avoid dog names that sound like or rhyme with the standard commands of No, Stay, Sit, Come, Down, or Fetch. With a name that sounds like a command it’s difficult for dogs to tell the difference.
Third, choose a name that is both easy to call out and one you won’t be embarrassed about. Keep in mind that you will be the one calling your dog’s name in public places and maybe even shouting it out in a park. For example, if you’re the macho type of guy, you would be embarrassed calling your dog`s name in public if his or her name is Cupcake or Sugar.
Also try not to call your dog`s name when you`re angry at him or her. If you raise your voice in anger every time you use your dog`s name, your dog will tend not to come on your call.
It`s better to wait for another couple of days and rethink what you have chosen rather than changing your pet’s name too often. The earlier you get your pet used to a name, the sooner you can start teaching your pet commands that you would like him/her to learn.
The choices for naming your dog are endless. You can get inspiration from many sources, like TV pet names, comic book names, celebrity names and more. Choose your pet`s name wisely as it will be one of the words you will say and hear several times during the day.
